Cheltenham Festival 2018: Sizing John is out

Last year's Gold Cup winner has suffered an injury

There is some disappointing news for racing fans. Sizing John, who won last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, no longer has a chance of a back-to-back victory. The horse has suffered a hairline fracture and this will prevent him from running at next week’s meet.

Sizing John would have provided some extra excitement to Gold Cup Day by being the first horse since Best Mate (2003) to attempt to defend the title.

The meet, which runs over several days, kicks off Sloaney Season. Opening on Tuesday, the Cheltenham Festival climaxes with Gold Cup Day, which takes place on Friday. Ladies Day is also a highlight and you can read our tips from Miss England about how to impress the judges.
