Cambridge stormed to victory in The Boat Race yesterday and wiped the board by winning all of the races throughout the day.
It was a chilly afternoon on the River Thames but this didn’t stop the crowds from gathering for the famous occasion. The pubs were packed from Putney to Mortlake as spectators enjoyed drinks and lunch prior to the start of the races.
Cambridge were touted as the stronger of the two varisty sides and powered through to take victory. There was some added drama off the water as student environmental activists interrupted the event to protest against both universities’ investment in fossil fuel companies.
While the protest did not interfere with the competition, flares were let off on Hammersmith Bridge, which is one of the most popular viewing points for the race. The demonstrators also dropped a 10m banner reading “Oxbridge Divest” during the men’s race.
The disruption was minimal and didn’t deter the rowers from speeding down the river. Cambridge celebrated their triumphant day by toasting their victories with Chapel Down sparkling wine and here are some of our highlights from the 2018 Boat Race…
