What to expect at the Qatar Goodwood Festival

This is one of the best racing meets in The Season and is known by many as Glorious Goodwood. From the excitement and anticipation of the opening day on Tuesday, to the £1million Qatar Sussex Stakes on the Wednesday, Ladies Day on Thursday, a total of four Group races on Friday and the thrill of the Stewards’ Cup Cavalry Charge on Saturday – it’s not a matter of which day to come, but how many…

The weather is normally glorious (as is the location); hence the meet has become known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’, despite its official name being the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Famous faces

Top jockeys and owners attend this premier racing meet. High profile celebrities will also be in the crowds at Glorious Goodwood. Darcy Bussell has been spotted, as well as Zara Phillips and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Event hotspots and hospitality

The Richmond Enclosure is the place to be seen. The Richmond Enclosure has restricted access and features stylish bars including the Champagne Lawn and 1812 Bar, a number of restaurants, private boxes and offers the best vantage points of the Parade Ring and Racecourse.

The premier public enclosure at the Qatar Goodwood Festival is known as the Gordon Enclosure. There is also a bar at the top of the grandstand that offers panoramic views of the course and is open to all. The Lennox Enclosure is the most relaxed area and welcomes picnics.

Did you know

In the late 18th century, Goodwood became the location for the first flag start on a British racecourse, at the behest of Lord George Bentinck, after a particularly shambolic start involving jockey Sam Arnull caused by an elderly deaf starter with a speech impediment.

This is an unusual, complex racecourse with a straight six furlongs, which is uphill for the first furlong and mostly downhill thereafter.

Big Orange has won the Goodwood Cup for two years running and will be going for a third win this year.
